Get ready for Jasper's newest sport - Yukigassen. Japanese for "Snow Battle", this is a truly Canadian sport, perfect for all ages and skill levels. The sport has been around for nearly 25 years in Japan, but it is just hitting Canada and first came to Jasper in January, 2012.

Get ready for Jasper's newest sport: Yukigassen

Support the MS Society and enjoy a great weekend away in Jasper!

Yukigassen, Japanese for "Snow Battle", is a truly Canadian sport, perfect for all ages and skill levels. The sport has been around for nearly 25 years in Japan, but it is just hitting Canada and came to Jasper in January 2012.

Jasper has signed on to host the Canadian National tournament for the next five years, with the winning team earning a place at the World Championships in Japan. This years tournament will be held on November 24-25, 2012 and you're invited to join in the action at this exciting sporting event!

The Game

This dynamic game is played on a snow court 40 metres long by 10 metres wide. Each teamm of seven players battles the opposing team with 90 snowballs per period, attempting to eliminate the opposing team with the snowballs or capturing their flag. All snowballs are made to specific standards in the machines provided so the game is fair and safe.

How to Win

There are two ways to win a Yukigassen battle:

  1. Try and hit the all the other team members with snowballs while dodging counter-attacks.
  2. Capture the other team's flag within the match time limit, without being hit by a snowball from the opposing team.

Yukigassen Rules

  • Each Yukigassen match consists of three periods
  • Each team must prepare 90 snowballs per period (snowball makers will be available onsite)
  • Each period is three minutes long
  • Each team has seven active players (up to nine players including substitutes)

Registration Info

The registration deadline is November 12th, so don’t delay!

The cost to register a team (7 people) is $280 and $40 per additional player to a maximum of 2 players.

This year, Tourism Jasper is proud to announce that 20% of the team registration fee will be donated to the MS Society of Canada. Get your team together and register for this not-to-be-missed Jasper event.
