Celebrating Jasper's distinction as the largest Dark Sky Preserve in the world! The Jasper Dark Sky Festival is October 12 - 14 with themed events, activities and packages in and around Jasper.

JASPER'S DARK SKY FESTIVAL EVENT SCHEDULE

Friday, October 12th

8:00 to 10:00 pm - Wine & Cheese reception at the Mountain Galleries in the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge. Including keynote speaker Peter McMahon from 8:30 to 9:30 pm.

Saturday, October 13th

10:00 am to 12:00 pm- 1, 2's, 3's of Telescope Use by Frank Florian at the Chaba Theatre

11:00 am to 3:00 pm- Just For Kids Space Cadet Fair at the Visitor Information Centre

Space Cadet Fair Schedule:

  • 11:00 to 11:30 am - Create your own Dream Catcher Solar System
  • 11:00 am to 12:00 pm - Face Painting
  • 11:30 am to 12:00 pm- Parks Canada’s “Create 'N Paint” your own Constellation
  • 12:00 to 1:00 pm - Planet Treasure Hunt,  Presented by Edmonton Science Outreach Network
  • 1:00 to 1:30 pm - Pop Bottle decorating (to be launched Jasper Elementary School)
  • 1:00 to 1:30 pm - Create your own Dream Catcher Solar System
  • 1:00 to 2:30 pm - Face Painting
  • 1:30 to 2:30 pm- Parks Canada’s “Create 'N Paint” your own Constellation
  • 1:45 to 2:00 pm - Guided Walk to Jasper Elementary School
  • 2:00 to 3:00 pm - Rocket Launch at Jasper Elementary School

1:00 to 4:00 pm- Astronomy presentations at the Chaba Theatre

3:30 to 6:30 pm- Telus World of Science Planetarium at Jasper Elementary School

5:00 to 8:00 pm- Star Grazing at the Jasper Park Riding Stables. Come join Matricia Brown for an unforgettable experience involving First Nation drumming and storytelling around the fire. For those who would like to ignite their creative flare, Jasper Community Habitat for the Arts will teach you the art of Flashlight painting. You will also have the opportunity to purchase a printed copy of your artwork.

6:00 to 8:00 pm- Dinner With the "Stars". Join our Jasper Dark Sky Festival featured presenters for dinner at the beautiful Pyramid Lake Resort. Peter McMahon will deliver a presentation during dinner followed by a speaking engagement with Bob McDonald. Famed Astrophotography expert, Yuichi Takasaka will also be dining.

8:00 to 10:00 pm-Pyrimid Island Starlight Adventure. Pyramid Island will be decorated beautifully for your experience the opportunity to view all different areas of the sky presents itself with our astronomers from the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, Edmonton Science Outreach Network, Parks Canada and the Telus World of Science Edmonton.

10:30 am to 12:30 pm - Closing remarks by Peter McMahon and Bob McDonald

2:00 to 4:00 pm - Night Sky Photography Session with Yuichi Takasaka
