Tis the season to test your limits in the great outdoors. Throughout Alberta and B.C. we’ve found some wild and unusual sporting events to either get you down right muddy, soaked, or sparkling clean. Check below for some slo-pitch tournaments, a mud-fest, a bathtub race and a challenge in the Crowsnest that will test your mettle.

Funtastic Sport and Music Festival – Vernon, BC (June 29 – July 2)
From June 29 – July 2, Vernon will be hosting the Funtastic Sport and Music Festival its 34th year. Funtastic is Canada’s largest sport and music festival, combining an exciting slo-pitch tournament with live entertainment. People from all over the country gather at Funtastic to take part in or spectate the huge Slo-Pitch tournament that takes place on 21 different fields with over 60 players. In the evening, festivalgoers can enjoy live entertainment by 70s and 80s style classic rock bands in the evenings. Read more about the festival.

5K Foam Fest – Medicine Hat, AB (June 30)
Colour runs, Spartan races and hardcore obstacle courses have been steadily gaining popularity over the past few years – but have you ever heard of a foam run? Foam Fest is their messier, muddier and even more wild cousin. Foam Fest features over 22 exciting obstacles to fight your way through, including mud pits, slip and slides, and an inflatable waterslide. Prepare to get absolutely covered in muck and mud and have the time of your life while doing so.

World Championship Bathtub Race – Nanaimo, BC (July 20 – 22)

Planes, trains, and...bathtubs? Since 1967, the Loyal Nanaimo Bathtub Society has proudly recognized the bathtub as a mode of transportation during the city’s famed bathtub races. Watch as over 200 participants race souped-up bathtubs from the Nanaimo Harbour. The day before the race, the festivities are kicked off with a parade, fireworks, and live music. Other fun events during the weekend include the Bathtub Days Street Fair, food trucks, beer gardens, and more. Read more details.

Chestermere Water Festival – Chestermere, AB (July 28)
What better way is there to spend a hot summer day than on the lake? Celebrate summer in Chestermere at John Peake Park by competing in or watching a thrilling wakeboard competition or taking a boat tour. The event also features a wide variety of family-friendly activities like an artisan market, live entertainment, food trucks, and a fireworks display.

Meet the Minotaur – Crowsnest Pass, AB (August 25)
Spend the day in Crowsnest Pass putting your physical and mental abilities to the test while surrounded by a beautiful, rugged alpine vista. Named for the maze-guarding half man, half beast of Greek mythology, Meet the Minotaur is not your average adventure race. The event features a 15-20km trail where competitors will use strength, endurance, navigation skills, courage, and humility to find their way through the course. The challenging trail will teach you how to overcome self-doubt and to look your own personal Minotaur right in the eyes. Want in on the challenge?
