“The Play’s The Thing” during Shakespeare by the Sea in Nanaimo

Nanaimo is home to a gorgeous sea side theatre where you will find incredible views of the ocean and classic Shakespeare plays. Something is rotten in the state of Denmark – or shall we say something good is at the harbour of Nanaimo. Stop by the Pioneer Waterfront Plaza from September 16 through 19 for performances of two of Shakespeare’s best plays at Nanaimo’s annual Shakespeare by the Sea.

Othello will include some of the bard’s best work, digging deep into the love, hate, jealousy, revenge we expect form his works. Yet, there is a twist. Just as the play was set in Cypress in 1603, this rendition is set in 1970 when Canadian soldiers were stationed in Cypress to “keep the peace.” Authentic uniforms and deactivated weapons are supplied by the Ashton Armoury to add to the authenticity.

On a lighter note, Much Ado About Nothing is one of Shakespeare’s comedies set in the port town of Messina…or is it the Port town of Nanaimo? “Bait the hook well; this fish will bite” is the perfect line to tempt you into this story of trickery. Find out for yourself as the plot swirls around gossip, deceit and shame.

400 years after his death, Shakespeare can still hook us with his words. Join the Vancouver Island Shakespeare Arts Society as they celebrate his work.
