You may not remember the ‘60s – or weren’t even born yet – but you’re guaranteed to have a groovy time at the 60th Vernon Winter Carnival happening Feb. 7 – 16, 2020.

The whole town gets into the spirit of the 10-day carnival. This year’s theme is the swinging ‘60s. 

There are so many ways to get your peace, love and tie-dye on in this winter-loving city, from hot air balloon festivals to ice and snow-sculpting competitions, wine and beer tastings, downhill races, hockey and curling challenges and plenty of other activities for all ages.

Vernon Winter Carnival

Various dates: Valley First Trip Around Town - Dress up in your best ‘60s bell bottoms and beads, print out the map and hit the road around Vernon for this all-day event. You can sign up for either date. There will be a series of challenges to complete and a chance to win a grand prize. You’ll have to wait until Jan. 13 to learn what the rules and obstacles will be. Feb. 7, BeerCan Beiner – Snap into your cross-country skis and put on your headlamp for a softer and more social take on the Nordic tradition that celebrates the Birkebeinerrennet, the annual 50+km race in Lillehammer, Norway every year. Vernon’s version, the BeerCan Beiner traverses a lovely 5-km trail to three rustic locations, where you can sample craft beer and end it with a warming cup of cocoa at a lodge.

Feb. 8, Predator Ridge Parka Party – Get a babysitter for this one, and bundle up in your coziest parka for this outdoor food and drink extravaganza at Predator Ridge. There will be a fireside s’more station, a pig roast and lots of samples of local wine and spirits. Then spend the night at Predator Ridge with a special nightly rate of $139. 

Various dates, Silver Star events: Silver Star ski resort gets in on the Vernon Winter Carnival action with several special events. First up is the Snow Sculpture competition on Feb. 7, where you can see the talents of local artists turning snow into artistic creations. Then there’s the the Over the Hill Downhill on Feb 9 that pits teams of four or individuals, ages 65+ against one another in this long-standing tradition to see who can go fastest down the mountain. It’s a blast to watch. 

Feb. 11, Pinot and Paint: Organize your friends and get your tickets early for this fun and popular event at the Vernon Public Art Gallery. Find your inner painter, sip a pinot noir or pinot grigio and follow along on a painting project with a professional artist. You get to take home your creation at the end of the evening. 

Feb14, Valentine’s Night Ski at Sovereign Lake: All ages are invited to get tickets for a fun evening of cross-country skiing at Sovereign Lake The rolling terrain is all-skill-level-friendly. If you miss it, don’t worry, the trails are open through mid-March.
